The Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) is a Scotland’s largest and oldest independent marine science organisation, delivering marine science for a productive and sustainably managed marine environment through innovative research, education and engagement with society.

SAMS-Enterprise (from 1st April 2021) provides specialist marine consultancy and survey services, underpinned by cutting-edge science. SAMS-Enterprise enables our clients to understand and mitigate the risks involved in industry interaction with the marine environment; to maximise productivity and sustainability.

SAMS Enterprise is the wholly-owned trading subsidiary of the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), and is based at the Scottish Marine Institute, Oban. As such, SAMS Enterprise has been a part of the SAMS Group since 2002. Through the multidisciplinary marine research and in-house facilities of the Scottish Marine Institute, SAMS Enterprise provides a bespoke service, based on a synergistic approach to complex projects that single discipline organisations simply cannot achieve. SAMS Enterprise project manages intellectual expertise, laboratory work and survey schedules to ensure delivery to time and budget for our clients

To project manage the formal engineering design, development and manufacture of a market ready frame/housing to facilitate SAMS snow/ice testing apparatus to deal with the most unforgiving terrain and extreme weather conditions.

To verify the frame/housing design iterations through formal design assessment, Finite Element Analysis and prototyping.

To verify the structural integrity of the design via the execution of physical mechanical and scientific testing on key components of the assembly.

To participate in field trail tests and, if required, make key design changes to in a bid to further improve the based on the learnings from those field trials

To undertake value engineering to ensure the resulting design is economical in terms of manufacturing.

To develop and implement suitable manufacturing systems & processes necessary to manufacture and support this product for the company.

To produce engineering 3D models, working drawings and mechanical assessment to assist in the manufacture of the product and its individual components.

To engage with potential end users to establish market requirements and utilisation methods
