Armagh based Collen Bros (Quarries) Ltd collaborated with Wirtgen Ireland Ltd, based in Co. Meath to develop a system in their asphalt production plant to reduce cleaning, material wastage and production costs to enable them to offer coloured asphalt products to customers in smaller quantities and on the same day as normal black asphalts were being mixed.
Asphalt products are traditionally black in colour. Advanced materials and production techniques now enable traditional asphalt products to be produced in a wide variety of attractive colours but in Ireland, due to colour and material contamination, these were routinely only available in large quantities and then only on weekends when black asphalt was not being mixed.
The cross-border project was made possible through the Co-Innovate programme, which is supported by the European Union’s INTERREG VA Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB). Co-Innovate supports business-to-business, cross-border, innovative partnerships with funding of up to €300k.
